1. Visit the licensing website for the appropriate state.Look for
“License Lookup” on their official site (see the list of states and links below).
2. Select the relevant department. In some states, it’s called
Department of Cosmetology and Barbering; in others,
Division of Licensing and Regulation.
Tip: If you're not sure, use the option to search across
all departments.
3. Choose the license type (optional).
For instance:
Cosmetology,
Nail Technician, etc. (this depends on the profession).
4. Enter the professional’s full name, exactly as it appears on their documents.
5. Click “Search.”Make sure to verify not only that the license is
active, but also that there are
no disciplinary actions or complaints on record.
Important Notes:Barbers: In some states, barber licenses are managed by separate boards and may
not appear in the general license lookup system.
Always check if your state has a
dedicated Barbering Board or separate database.
Permanent Makeup Artists (PMU) / Tattoo Artists:In
90% of cases, these professions are
regulated by local Health Departments,
not cosmetology boards.
You’ll need to search through
county or state health department websites for license verification.
Can’t Find the Specialist in the Database? There are two possible reasons:
- You may have misspelled the first or last name.
Double-check the spelling exactly as it appears on their ID.
- The specialist might not have a license.
In that case — feel free to tell them about me!
They need a valid license to legally provide services.
No license = no right to work.
